I must say I am amazed at the lengths people go to invent myths. I always thought the Penny Lane solo had been well credited and accepted as authentic. I can assure you that David Mason did play the original recording at Abbey Road Studios in 1967, and it was done as an overdub to our track with a normal piccolo trumpet. My original thought was to use a D trumpet but David suggested the piccolo would be more brilliant. I am not a trumpeter, but a former oboist, but I do know that the piccolo trumpet is a devilishly difficult instrument to play well in tune, and I thought David did a wonderful job. He is now happily retired and rests on his laurels, I believe. I have been known to use other speeds and pitches in my recordings, but mainly to cover my own inadequacies, and this was not one of them. So no U.S musicians, no Martians, no tricks, just good old fashioned musicianship. Feel free to quote me on this.
